Hostels, also known as Backpackers, specialize in providing inexpensive accommodation to travelers. Hostel lodging is generally sold by the bed rather than by rooms like hotels. Average stay length varies from three to seven days though many also stay for just one night or for as long as 30 days. Hostel accommodations usually consist of dormitory style rooms with shared kitchen, and bathroom facilities. At select hostels private or semi-private rooms may also be available.

 The vast majority of hostel guests tend to be between 18 and 30 years old. Some hostels are restricted to guests within a certain age range. Far more common are hostels which accept guests regardless of age. One of the major attractions of hostels, aside from the budget friendly rates, is the chance to meet and interact with fellow travelers at hostel arranged events and activities. Hostels often provide, organize, or make available free or low cost tours and activities, such as hiking, BBQ, movie nights etc.
